Frequently Asked Questions

• How do I know if I am covered on my insurance?

We can check this for you. Just provide us with your insurer's name, your registration and your personal details and we'll check for you. Once we've ascertained as to whether you are covered or not, we won't start any work until you've given us the approval.

• Is it really free to repair or replace the damaged glass?

A repair is usually free depending on your policy and it won't affect your no-claims bonus. For a glass replacement you may have to pay a small excess; usually ranging from £50 to £80. If you don't have insurance cover for your vehicle's glass then a repair can be as in-expensive as £50, and the cost of replacement glass will depend on the type of glass you need for your vehicle. But don't worry, we won't start work until we've given you a quote.

• How do you repair a chip without replacing the glass?

Essentially we clean the chip and inject it with a special resin. We'll then harden the resin with UV light to make the windscreen as strong as before. Then we'll polish it up so the damage is almost invisible.

• How long will it take to repair a chip?

Usually 30 mins, and you can drive away immediately once we finished the work.

• How long will it take to replace the glass?

To replace the glass, the work can take between 90-120 minutes. We'll cover up your bodywork and interior, and then remove your old windscreen. We'll apply a primer and a bonding glue to make a good seal and insert your new windscreen. Then just wait around 1 HOUR for the glue to set and you can drive away.

• I've booked online, what happens next?

We'll call you around time you specified, and on the number you've given us to check the details you've submitted and to finalise your appointment.

The Factory

Since 1982 we've had the unique advantage of being the only automotive glazing company in the UK to manufacture our own laminated windscreens. Being our own manufacturer gives us complete control over our supply chain and stock availability.

Our factory in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, is the most modern in Europe using cutting edge technology including a sophisticated bending furnace and the latest in lamination techniques. We produce more than 870 different types of automotive glazing plus we can carry out special commissions for unusual and vintage vehicles. We also produce specialist glazing for industry and for the police and the army.

All our work is carried out with rigorous safety checks at every stage.  We have an unbroken record of 600 days without a ‘lost time’ accident to date.

Recently the factory was commended in the World Class Manufacturing Award category of the prestigious Manufacturer Awards 2008.

This award is viewed by the business as a fantastic achievement. The company was up against some of the world’s leading manufacturers.

The World Class Manufacturing Award is judged by bench marking and examining criteria such as lead times, customer returns, work content, labour minutes per unit, inventory levels and cycle times.

The judges recognise companies that have already made significant, sustained progress towards being ‘world class’ and those who have made the commitment and got off to an impressive start.

Peter Fox, Managing Director of Auto Windscreens explained: "To achieve a commendation is nothing short of excellent for a business whose core function is not manufacturing. We are rightly proud of our windscreen manufacturing operation and are delighted that the Manufacturer Awards’ judges recognised what we have achieved over the past year in achieving world class performance."

We've also been commended by the Environment Agency. We’ve reduced all waste by 30% and recycled 100% of all cardboard, glass, paper, plastic, wood and metal since 2007.
