A 91-year-old has managed to pass their driving test first time, according to the latest figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT). A report by the Daily Telegraph said that in total, 20 people aged 80 and above took their driving test for the first time in the last financial year. Along with the 91-year-old, two drivers aged 80 and another aged 81 also passed. The DfT said the oldest driver to attempt the test, aged 93, failed. In Britain, there is no age at which motorists are required by law to surrender their licence. People can remain on the roads as long as they are able to satisfy the medical standards required for safe driving – any medical conditions that might affect someone's ability to drive safely must be reported to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. Almost half (47 per cent) of all practical car tests carried out in the UK in 2011/12 were taken by people aged 20 or under. Learner drivers aged 17 accounted for a fifth of all tests – this age group also had the highest pass rate.
