Motorists have been advised by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) to use screen wash to clean their car windscreens.
The organisation made the call after research revealed that warm stagnant water can be a potential breeding ground for bacteria which causes legionnaire's disease.
In addition, the study suggested that around a fifth of cases recorded in the UK may have arisen from exposure to water used to clean car windscreens.
However, it added that the use of screenwash in the mix could kill much of the bacteria, meaning it provides benefits in terms of both cleanliness and health.
Professor Hugh Pennington, an expert in the study of bacteria, told the BBC said: "Windscreen fluid stops the bug from growing. If you can prevent it with something this simple then it's a no brainer really."
Recent figures from Marks & Spencer Car Insurance suggested that over one in ten football fans have placed England flags on their windscreens to show support for the team's World Cup campaign.
