Cheaper insurance for drivers with automatic breaking device

Motorists who drive vehicles fitted with a new emergency braking technology could soon enjoy savings on their insurance premiums.

According to a report by Auto Express, insurers in the UK have agreed to reduce the cost of covering vehicles fitted with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) following extensive tests. The system works through the use of radar, sensors and cameras and will automatically apply a car's breaks if it detects a dangerous situation that the driver has not reacted to.

According to Matthew Avery, head of research at Thatcham, the technology has been proven to reduce accidents on the roads and will result in lower insurance premiums for people who have the system built into their car.

He said: "We've got test data showing a 27 per cent real-world reduction in crashes for vehicles fitted with AEB.

"We're seeing that these AEB systems have such a huge effect that insurers can offer big discounts."

The report said that discounts could be applied as soon as October now that The Association of British Insurers’ Group Rating Panel has agreed to the move, with affected cars dropping their level of risk by up to four insurance groups.
