Motorists in Leicester have been warned that they risk an automatic £60 penalty fine if they drive in the city's bus lanes after July 6. A report by the Leicester Mercury newspaper said cameras monitoring bus lanes on two streets caught 245 people breaking the law in the space of three days last week. Those lucky drivers have escaped a fine this time and simply received a warning letter in the post. However, officials have said from next Monday they will be taking a tougher approach. "We support any initiative which helps our drivers get from A to B more easily," said Ady Culpin, marketing manager at bus company First, which has welcomed the crackdown on drivers who ignore Leicester's bus only signs. "If the bus lanes are used by cars it causes a problem because it blocks up the lanes, making us late, and affecting the reliability of our services." Councillor Rory Palmer, deputy city mayor responsible for transport, told the newspaper that he believed the move would help to get the public transport system moving more smoothly.
