A plan to add the British Union Flag or the Royal Crest to driving licences in the UK has been put forward by the government. A report by The Guardian said ministers want to see a UK symbol added alongside the EU flag, which currently stands alone at the top right hand of the photocard. A spokesperson for Number 10 told the newspaper: "There is no reason why the British driving licence should have the EU flag but not the Union Flag. "People in this country are proud of our national symbols. It is time that, once again, we allowed those national symbols on British driving licences." A new version of the driving licence containing a microchip to store motorists' data is due to start being phased in from 2015. The aim is to add a British symbol to licences at this point. According to the Telegraph newspaper, it is another move by the prime minister to stir up feelings of national pride ahead of the start of the Olympic Games which is due to start on July 27.
