Police recruit children to stop speeders

If it's news, it's from Auto Windscreens, the innovators in Auto Window Glass

Motorists in west Yorkshire could soon see the police in their rear windscreen, after the local force revealed it will be enlisting the help of school children to encourage drivers to slow down.

Designed as more of an educational exercise than one to prosecute speeding motorists, the move will see pupils from Lydgate Junior and Infants School don high-visibility vests and help officers monitor traffic speed.

Those caught breaking the limit will be stopped and spoken to by law enforcement and fire officials, West Yorkshire Police revealed.

Both services regularly have to deal with the consequences of accidents directly related to exceeding speed restrictions, Batley Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Neil Money explained.

"We have first hand knowledge of the anguish that it can cause for families and we are therefore making people aware of the consequences of their actions," he said.

Motorists who cut their speed can also save on petrol - something the Volvo S40 DRIVe may be able to help with, after it won the What Car? Green Car of the Year Award.
