Police slam drivers for taking to the pavement

Car drivers in Swindon have been criticised by police after using the pavement to avoid a road closure in the town centre.

A local resident posted a video on YouTube after spotting motorists mounting the curb and driving on the pavement next to pedestrians, in order to bypass street repairs.

According to a report by the BBC, local resident Nigel Scott decided to film the scene as he thought it was a "really bizarre" thing for drivers to do with pedestrians in the way.

Inspector Steven Cox of Wiltshire Police said the video shot by Mr Scott clearly showed motorists driving along the pavement on Victoria Road, while members of the public walked in between.

"Officers have viewed the YouTube footage and were appalled to see such bad driving," he said. "The motorists who mounted the kerb and edged along the pavement were acting very irresponsibly and could potentially have put pedestrians at risk of serious injury."

More than 650 people have now watched the video on YouTube, entitled How Drivers in Swindon Deal with a Road Closure.
