Road users need to be more aware, says motoring group

Drivers need to make more of an effort to be aware of other road users, according to one UK motoring organisation. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called on people to take more care when they are behind the wheel, on a motorbike or cycling. It follows a survey by the group which found 58 per cent of its members recalled being cut-up in the last six months by another road user who failed to look properly before manoeuvring. Simon Best, chief executive of the IAM, said: "SMIDSY (Sorry mate I didn't see you) moments are happening far too often, and very few people are prepared to take responsibility for their part in them. He said: "It's always someone else's fault. All road users need to be more aware of who they are sharing the road with, and the risks they present." Mr Best said the body language of other drivers and their position on the road can signal their intentions. But he added that it is always best to "drive defensively" and leave room to get out of trouble if another driver does something unexpected. The IAM recommends drivers always watch out for motorcyclists and cyclists, always give clear signals, and always use their mirrors, especially in traffic queues and before changing direction.
