Welsh town to bring back traffic wardens after year of chaos

A seaside town in Wales, which last year stopped using traffic wardens to catch people parking illegally, is to once again crackdown on motorists who ignore restrictions. The last of the traffic wardens employed by the police in Aberystwyth were laid off in May 2011 following budget cuts, before the local council was able to draw up plans to replace them. And for the past year motorists in the town have caused chaos, parking on yellow lines, in disabled bays and even on pavements. One shopkeeper said: "It's making life difficult for businesses, it's bad for road safety, and the fear is it could delay an ambulance or a fire engine." A report by the Daily Mail said the town's local newspaper, Cambrian News, had begun a weekly column featuring pictures of the worst offenders. The free-for-all led to angry confrontations between drivers and even fights in the street. But from bank holiday Monday, the traffic wardens will be back to ticket anyone caught flouting the rules. According to a council spokesman, the Civil Parking Enforcement Team will be on duty seven days a week. He said: "The CEOs will issue Penalty Charge Notices to vehicles parked in contravention of parking restrictions on the street and off street in council car parks."
