A large spring flew from a car and damaged the windscreen of a bus recently in Essel, north Germany.
The spring had come from a vehicle's faulty suspension system, the German Herald reports.
It went through the windshield of the bus, hitting driver Wolfgang Mahler, 60, in the head.
"Luckily for everyone on board, one of the passengers realised what had happened and grabbed the steering wheel," an Essel police officer told the newspaper.
Some 28 passengers, including a school football team, were travelling on the bus at the time of the accident.
The passenger who took control of the vehicle's steering wheel managed to bring it safely to a halt 500 yards up the road.
A police spokesman labelled the incident a "freak accident" and said that the coach driver was recovering.
Last month, the Gazette Live reported that a bus had been damaged after the vehicle's driver suffered a seizure while at the wheel in Teeside.
