Windscreen Repair Process
How do you repair a windscreen chip?
When a laminated windscreen is chipped or cracked usually only the outer layer of glass is broken. The good news is that windscreen chips can often be repaired, depending on size and location.
When repairing a windscreen chip the following steps are completed:
- Firstly the area around the chip is cleaned and dirt and debris are removed from the impact point using a probe.
- Next a special repair jig is positioned over the damaged area and resin is injected under pressure.
- Once the resin has fully penetrated the impact crater a UV lamp is used to cure the resin.
Is the process weather dependant?
It is recommended that windscreen repairs and replacements are completed in dry weather conditions. However, thanks to our van canopy solution Auto Windscreens are able to complete work in inclement weather conditions without jeopardising the quality of the windscreen repair.
How long will the entire process take?
A windscreen chip repair will usually take 30 minutes to complete, if weather conditions dictate the use of our van canopy then the repair time will be around 40 minutes in total, accounting for the deployment of the canopy.
Once the repair is completed the vehicle can be driven immediately.
Will I notice the original damage after the repair is complete?
Once a windscreen chip is repaired the damaged area will not totally disappear. There will usually be a small scar/mark left in the damaged area; the scar can often visually resemble a small dried rain drop.
