ADAS Checks in MOTs - An Essential Step for Safer Roads?
The European Commission has recently proposed an overhaul of the EU’s road safety rules, which could include mandatory checks on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as part of periodic technical inspections – similar to the UK’s MOT.
At Auto Windscreens, we welcome this approach. Our Managing Director, James MacBeth, recently commented:
"It’s about time checks on ADAS systems were added to MOTs. In the EU, it’s already mandatory for new cars to be equipped with these features, and we’re seeing this technology become increasingly common on UK roads.
Not enough drivers know that if they have specific repairs, like windscreen replacements, they need to have a calibration to keep their ADAS working safely. If a radar sensor is even a few degrees out, it can mean a difference of nearly nine metres on the road – a crucial factor when it comes to safety.”
ADAS technologies like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) rely on sensors, often placed behind the front badge or grille, to function correctly. If these sensors aren’t calibrated accurately, they may not work as intended, potentially putting drivers and other road users at risk.
As the UK considers its own approach to road safety and MOT regulations, we’re ready to support our partners with the knowledge and services they need to keep vehicles safe and compliant.
