Beat the Heat: Bug Battles and Windscreen Wins This Summer

🌞 Auto Windscreens Summer Driving Advice 2025

As the UK heats up, summer driving brings unique challenges for your windscreen and vehicle safety systems. At Auto Windscreens, we’re here to help you stay safe and informed with expert advice tailored to the season.

  1. 🐜 Bug Build-Up Can Block Your View – and Your Safety Systems

With insect activity on the rise this summer, including the annual surge of flying ants (often dubbed Flying Ant Day, though it spans several days), bugs splattered on your windscreen aren’t just unsightly – they can obstruct your view and interfere with your ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Cameras and sensors, often mounted behind the windscreen, need a clear line of sight to function properly.

Tip: Regularly clean your windscreen, especially around the camera area. Use a soft cloth and suitable cleaner to avoid smearing or scratching. If you’re unsure where your ADAS camera is located, our team can help identify it.

  1. ❄️ Avoid Blasting the Air Con Immediately

It’s tempting to crank the air conditioning as soon as you get into a hot car, but sudden temperature changes can stress your windscreen. The rapid cooling can cause existing chips or weaknesses to expand into full cracks due to thermal shock – a result of the glass expanding and contracting unevenly.

Tip: Start with windows down or use a lower fan setting for a few minutes before turning the air con up. This gradual cooling helps protect your glass.

  1. 🧼 Keep Windscreens Clean – Inside and Out

Dust, pollen, and summer grime can build up quickly. A dirty windscreen can cause glare and reduce visibility, especially in bright sunlight.

Tip: Clean both sides of the glass regularly. Use a microfibre cloth and glass cleaner for a streak-free finish.

  1. 🌡️ Park Smart to Protect Your Windscreen

Extreme heat can weaken glass over time. Parking in direct sunlight can also cause your car’s interior to overheat, affecting electronics and sensors.

Tip: Use sunshades or park in shaded areas when possible. This helps maintain a stable temperature and protects both your windscreen and ADAS components.
