Why Your Dashboard Matters More Than You Think
When it comes to road safety, most drivers know the importance of a clean windscreen. But what about the dashboard?
At Auto Windscreens, we’re highlighting a lesser-known but critical safety issue: dashboard clutter. From parking tickets and takeaway cups to dangling air fresheners and novelty items, even small objects can obstruct your view, and put you at risk of a fine.
The Hidden Danger of Dashboard Clutter
Obstructions on or near the dashboard can limit visibility, especially in poor weather or low-light conditions. Combined with the glare from modern LED headlights, even a minor distraction can become a major hazard.
According to the Highway Code, failure to maintain a full view of the road ahead is a road traffic offence. Drivers could face a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points.
What to Watch Out For
Common dashboard items that can cause problems include:
- Stickers or chips on the windscreen
- Parking tickets or paperwork
- Air fresheners hanging from the rear-view mirror
- Toys or decorations
- Cups, bottles, or loose items
These may seem harmless, but they can block your line of sight or become dangerous projectiles in the event of a sudden stop.
Stay Safe and Compliant
James MacBeth, Managing Director of Auto Windscreens, advises:
“Drivers should keep their windscreens clean and clear, check them regularly for any damage and get it fixed, as well as remove any items on or near the dashboard that could obscure their view.”
